The AMIA Local Arrangements Group for the 2004 AMIA Annual Conference in Vancouver has arranged three local tours. If you are interested in attending one or more of these tours, please make your reservation by sending your name and phone number by email to: events@amianet.org. For the Historic Theatre Tour, you must include your $7.50 with your conference fees.

Tour 1 – PAVEK MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING
Wednesday, November 10th, 2004
Time: 10:00am - Noon

Located just west of downtown Minneapolis, the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting is dedicated to education and the preservation of the history of radio and television. For AMIA attendees, it’s a technical historian’s dream come true with over 12,000 square feet of antique radios, televisions, and broadcast equipment, as well as the Jack Mullin Collection of sound recording technology and an extensive library of technical literature. The Museum is also home to a growing archive of program material from area radio and television, and the Museum of Broadcasting Hall of Fame. www.pavekmuseum.org

Directions: From downtown Minneapolis, take I-394 west to Highway 100. Go south on Highway 100 to the West 36th Street exit (it’s the very next exit after Highway 7/County Road 25). Cloverleaf back north to 36th Street itself, and take a right onto 36th Street. You are now going east on 36th Street. Cross over Highway 100 and go through two lights. Just after the second light, there’s a left turn lane. That’s Raleigh Avenue. Turn left onto Raleigh. The Pavek is the third building on the right.


TOUR 2 - HISTORIC THEATRE TOUR

Meet in the Orpheum Theater lobby - 910 Hennepin Avenue
Fee: $7.50 per person

For all of you architecture buffs this tour will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the premiere historic theaters in downtown Minneapolis: The State, Orpheum, and Pantages. Built between 1916 and 1921 The State and Pantages were originally designed as movie palaces, while the Orpheum was a vaudeville house. As part of a downtown re-development project each theater has undergone extensive renovation. They are gems of their era and it will be a treat to get a closer look at their grandeur. TOUR 3 – TOUR OF THE MINNESOTA
HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN ST. PAUL

Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Transportation: on your own
Fee: none

Visit the other twin city and its beautiful Capitol mall adjacent to one of the largest historical societies in the nation. The tour will include a presentation by Bonnie Wilson, Curator of Moving Images, and Dan Bergin, producer for Twin Cities Public Television. Bonnie will introduce the Historical Society moving image collection by using a collaborative project with TPT as a case in point. In addition, the tour will include the museum galleries showing examples of moving images in exhibits. The museum shops will be open so that you can purchase that all-important Minnesota souvenir.

Added attractions: The Minnesota State Capitol, the Cathedral of St. Paul, and the James J. Hill House are within short walking distance for those who wish to spend more time in this lovely city. Bonnie will give brochures and directions to those who wish to extend their tour.

Directions: Take a cab to 345 Kellogg Blvd West in St. Paul. The exit is “Marion Street” off of Interstate 94 eastbound. Meet at the information desk on the first floor.
